Doctor Faustus

Written primarily in the blank verse, Doctor Faustus is a tragicomedy that traces the doomed fate of John Faustus, a scholar whose mastery over law, medicine and theology had earned him prominent renown, but caused him to become consumed by a gluttonous thirst for power and knowledge. In exchange for twenty-four years of supernatural abilities to pursue his boundless ambitions, he bargains away his soul to the Devil with the help of a demon named Mephistopheles, paving the path for his damnation. Throughout the play, Faustus’s moral anxieties and lingering humanity are externalized through Good and Evil Angels, coupled with soliloquies that lay bare his tussle between desire and repentance before the audience.
