FRAUD ALERT

Publishing Fraud Alert

For authors

Third parties continue to target authors to solicit money and personal information. Some of these schemes have involved the fraudulent use of our company and imprint names.

All official communication from our company is sent exclusively from an authorised company email address (e.g., @macmillan.co.in, @macmillan.com). We do not use personal or webmail accounts to conduct business, make offers, or solicit submissions.

If you receive a message claiming to represent us from an address that doesn't match this format, please treat it with caution and verify its authenticity before responding or sharing any information. You can confirm legitimacy by contacting us directly at compliance@macmillan.com.

Please be aware that the following are not legitimate Macmillan domains:

How to Spot a Fake

Watch for these common warning signs in any message claiming to be from us:

  • Mismatched or unusual sender address — check that the domain exactly matches ours (scammers often use lookalikes, e.g. swapped letters or extra characters).
  • Urgency or pressure — requests to "act now," respond within a few hours, or risk missing an opportunity.
  • Requests for money or fees — we will never ask you to pay a fee or deposit to publish, submit, or be considered.
  • Requests for sensitive personal or financial information — such as bank details, passwords, or ID documents, sent unprompted.
  • Unexpected attachments or links — especially ones asking you to "log in," "verify," or "download" something.
  • Generic or slightly off branding — poor grammar, incorrect logos, or a tone that doesn't match our usual communication.
  • Too-good-to-be-true offers — unsolicited praise, guaranteed acceptance, or unusually generous terms.

When in doubt: don't click, don't reply, don't pay. Contact us directly using the details on our official website to confirm whether a message is genuine.

If you have any concerns about the legitimacy of an email appearing to be from a Macmillan employee or claiming a connection to Macmillan, please email compliance@macmillan.com.

Seek legal advice before signing any contracts with a literary service.

Recruitment Fraud Alert

For potential employees

We are aware that third parties are impersonating Macmillan representatives and posting fake job openings on various platforms to phish for personal information, solicit money, or trick people into applying for fake freelance jobs. These scams may use a fake Macmillan email address and Macmillan’s logo on fake employment letters. Please be aware that Macmillan will never ask for any payment as a part of a job application or as a condition of employment.

Tips:

  • We do not currently offer employment opportunities on freelance sites like Telegram, Upwork, Fiverr, SolidGigs, etc. For our most up-to-date job postings, please visit https://careers.panmacmillan.com
  • Macmillan does not ask for fees during the onboarding process. Look out for any requests for advances, including, but not limited to, the payment for the use of laptop equipment, linking accounts, employee portal setup, etc.
  • If you are unsure of the identity of the sender of an email, do not click any links in the email.
  • Look out for misspellings in the job posting or in the email domain name.
  • Macmillan does not ask for bank account information or passwords as part of our recruitment process.
  • If you believe that you are the victim of a scam, stop communication, report it to the platform you have been communicating on, and contact the police.
  • If you have any concerns about the legitimacy of an email purporting to be from a Macmillan employee, contact us at compliance@macmillan.com

If you are the victim of a scam, we encourage you to report it immediately.
