The Woman in White

The Woman in White follows a drawing tutor, Walter Hartright, whose moonlit encounter with a mysterious woman in white entangles him in a conspiracy to strip heiress Laura Fairlie of her inheritance and identity, who was speculated to be inspired by Caroline Graves.

The commercially successful book popularized the Victorian sensation novel and ran serially in Charles Dickens’s magazine All the Year Round from 1859 to 1860 before its three-volume publication as a complete novel in 1860.
