Friedrich Engels
Friedrich Engels (1820–1895) was a Prussian-born philosopher and political theorist raised in a wealthy, devout Lutheran family. Influenced by Young Hegelianism and working-class struggles while working at his family's Manchester cotton mill, he authored The Condition of the Working Class in England (1845). In 1844, he formed a historic partnership with Karl Marx, co-writing The Communist Manifesto and financing Marx’s work. After joining the 1849 German uprising, Engels later reconstructed and edited the final volumes of Marx’s Das Kapital following Marx's death. An accomplished polyglot and international socialist leader, Engels died of cancer in London.
