Francis Turner Palgrave
Francis Turner Palgrave (1824–1897) was an English poet, critic, and anthologist born in Yarmouth to historian Sir Francis Palgrave. Educated at Balliol College, Oxford, he became an Exeter College Fellow and served as assistant private secretary to William Gladstone. Palgrave worked in the Privy Council’s Education Department before becoming Oxford’s Professor of Poetry in 1885. Collaborating closely with his friend Alfred Tennyson, he compiled the famous anthology The Golden Treasury (1861). Married to Cecil Grenville Milnes in 1862, Palgrave also published original verse, including 'Visions of England', before dying in London aged seventy-three.
