Dorothy L. Sayers
Born in Oxford in 1893, Dorothy L. Sayers was among the first women to receive a degree from Oxford University. While working as an advertising copywriter, she created the iconic detective Lord Peter Wimsey, transforming detective fiction into a sophisticated vehicle for social satire and psychological depth. Recognized as one of the golden age "Queens of Crime," Sayers co-founded the Detection Club and redefined the genre with complex, intellectually equal characters like Harriet Vane. Later in life, she turned to religious scholarship and produced an acclaimed translation of Dante’s Divine Comedy before her death in 1957.
