Marcus Aurelius
Philosopher–king Marcus Aurelius ruled the Roman Empire with a steady hand from 161 to 180. Marcus came to power amidst huge celebrations, but his reign was plagued by war and epidemics. In 177, Marcus proclaimed his son Commodus co-ruler, as the Danube wars broke out again, urging him to return to the battlefront. He died at his military outpost in Vindobona (modern-day Vienna) in 180.
